TO: president@whitehouse.comRE: \"Szekler National Council\"
Dear Mr. President,
The letter below is from a member of the \"Szekler National Council\" in Romania and I ask you to seriously consider it\'s requests and suggestions.
\"Dear Mr. President,
Recently, representatives of approximately 700,000 Szeklers living in a coherent group in Romania formed the \"Szekler National Council\". The goal of the Szekler National Council (SzNC) is the investigation of the possibilities for the formation of an autonomous Szeklerland within the borders of Romania. Upon the completion of the above investigation, the SzNC is planning to present the results to the Romanian Parliament.
Currently, the members of this council are being harassed by the Romanian government. On October 9, 2003 the Romanian police arrested and questioned for several hours Mr. Imre Fodor, Mr. Árpád Andrássy Mr. Lajos Márton and Mr. András Tőkés during the displaying of posters announcing the upcoming meeting of the Szekler National Council.
The Szeklers, according to the Webster’s Dictionary, are: “the Transylvanian branch of the Magyar people; their dialect of Hungarian, written in its own runic alphabet”.It is not widely known the fact that the Szeklers had had a wide ranging autonomy for approximately one thousand years; autonomy, that was granted to them by Hungarian kings.
This autonomy was completely lost following the WW1 when the Szeklers were dealt to Romania without being asked about it.I order to maintain political stability in Europe it is desirable to form similar autonomy in the Szeklerland, as is in South-Tirol, in Basque-land, in Catalonia, and the autonomy of the Swedish people in Finland.
Dear Mr. President, please request that the Government of Romania:
stop the harassment of the members of the SzNC,
stop the political prosecution being prepared by the Public Prosecutor’s Office,
stop the ethnic and political discrimination of the Szeklers, and file lawsuits against the harassers of the SzNC.
Dear Mr. President, apart from us, the Szeklers, currently approximately 1.54 millions of Hungarian Americans are looking up to you for help; please do investigate these harassments and do whatever is in your power to protect the human rights of the Szekler people living in Romania.
Respectfully Yours,
Lajos Márton, Professional Engineer,
Targu-Mures Transylvania, Romania,
Delegate of Szekler National Council\"
Dear Mr. President, I fully support this letter, please consider it\'s recommendations.
