Halálos áldozatokkal járó, összehangolt terrorcselekménynek tűnő robbanássorozat történt csütörtök délelőtt a londoni metróban és több londoni városi buszon. Az eddigi legsúlyosabb, ilyen jellegű londoni incidens után teljesen leállt a forgalom a 400 kilométeres metróhálózat egészén; a parlamentet rendkívüli ülésre hívták össze. A Scotland Yard csütörtök délelőtt megerősítette, hogy a londoni metróból jelentett robbanások után több városi buszon is detonációk történtek. Az autóbuszrobbantások nyomán a város hatóságai leállították London teljes buszforgalmát.

Több földalatti állomásról korommal borított, vérző utasokat menekítettek ki, a metróállomásokhoz rendkívüli erőkkel vonultak ki a mentők és a tűzoltók. A mentőegységek több tagja narancssárga vegyvédelmi ruhában dolgozott. Az egyik közlekedési cég részletek nélkül csütörtökön annyit közölt, hogy "néhány halálos áldozatról" tud. A londoni rendőrség tudomása szerint két ember vesztette életét az egyik metróállomáson történt robbantásban.

Charles Clarke belügyminiszter késő délelőtt rövid közleményben kérte a londoniakat, hogy ha nem feltétlenül szükséges, ne menjenek ki az utcára. Hozzátette: értesülései szerint a robbanások több esetben "rettenetes sérüléseket okoztak", nem bocsátkozott ugyanakkor találgatásokba arról, hogy mi okozhatta a detonációkat. Clarke közölte, hogy a parlament rendkívüli ülésén, még aznap beszámol a kialakult helyzetről.

A londoni közlekedési hatóság először "hatalmas méretű áramkimaradásról" beszélt, de ez az

állítás hamar megdőlt, miután kiderült, hogy nemcsak a metróban, hanem több buszon is robbanás történt. Az egyik busz a British Museumhoz közeli Russel Square-en haladt, amikor felső szintjének tetejét letépte a detonáció.

Az első kommentárok a robbantássorozatot egyértelműen összefüggésbe hozták a nyolc vezető ipari hatalom (G8) Skóciában folyó csúcstalálkozójával.

Az első detonáció a pénzügyi központ, a City keleti részén lévő Liverpool Street metróállomáson történt. Az állomás London egyik legnagyobb vasúti és metrócsomópontja; közvetlenül mellette van a kelet-európai átalakulás finanszírozására alakult Európai Újjáépítési és Fejlesztési Bank (EBRD). Nem sokkal utána hasonló detonáció miatt kiürítették a Stratford állomást is. A kelet-londoni Stratfordban lesz a London által éppen előző nap elnyert 2012-es nyári olimpiai játékok olimpiai központja.

Hasonló robbanások történtek az északnyugati városrészben lévő Edgware Road, az északi King's Cross és a Cityben lévő Aldgate állomásokon is. Ez utóbbiban nem megerősített beszámolók szerint mintegy kilencvenen sérültek meg. Ezután érkeztek a hírek a buszokon történt detonációkról. A London Underground, a metrót üzemeltető cég délelőtt bejelentette, hogy teljesen leállította a forgalmat a hálózat egészén. Erre a II. világháború óta nem volt példa.

Skóciában, a Nyolcak csúcsértekezletének helyszínén maradt Tony Blair brit kormányfő a londoni robbantások által kiváltott zavar ellenére. Pénzpiaci hírek voltak forgalomban arról, hogy Blair Londonba távozott Gleneaglesből, de a Downing Street szóvivője közölte: Blair skóciai szállodájában van, és rövidesen bejelentést tesz.

"The health services are in support to deal with the terrible injuries that there have been," Clarke told reporters outside Downing Street.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said there had been at least six explosions, but said the picture was still "very confused".

Scotland Yard said explosions have been reported at Edgware Road, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate.

Number 10 said it was "still unsure" whether the explosions were a terrorist attack and although casualties were reported, no further details were yet available.

Prime Minister Tony Blair is to make a live televised statement on the explosions in London at 1200 BST, Downing Street added.

All London Underground services have been suspended indefinitely and bus services in central London (Zone One) have been halted.

A spokesman for Vodafone said emergency services were being given priority access to the mobile phone network which was causing problems for other users.

Several people have been injured after explosions blamed on a power surge led to the whole London Underground network being closed down until further notice.
British Transport Police said some of the power surges had caused explosions.

Surges took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.

A spokesman said there were "walking wounded" at Liverpool Street station but one person's life was reported to be "at risk".

Scotland Yard confirmed they were assisting with a "major incident" and said there were casualties.

A spokesman said officers were called out to Aldgate station at 8.50am to assist City of London and British Transport Police.

"All of the emergency services are on scene. There have been some casualties. This has been declared as a major incident," said the spokesman. "It's too early to state what has happened at this stage," he said.
